“Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino: diverging paths of mannerism”: this  unique once in a lifetime  temporary exhibition in Palazzo Strozzi will stay open until July 20 on via Tornabuoni in Florence, just next to Palazzo Larderel. Over 80 masterpieces are on display together for the very first time, coming from major Italian and foreign  museums: National Gallery in London, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Musée du Louvre in Paris…  The exhibition, extremely well presented and comprehensible even for non art experts (the audio guides for children are perfectly done) explores different aspects of the two great artists’ work through their paintings,  drawings, tapestries and engravings.

The "Music -making Angel" by Rosso Fiorentino can be seen in Florence in Palazzo Strozzi's exhibition "Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino

Both artists were born in 1494 and were trained in Andrea del Sarto and Fra’ Bartolomeo’s workshops. Each of them maintained a different approach and a different expression in a movement called “Mannerism”. Pontormo, a favorite of the Medici (there is an admirable portrait of Cosimo de Medici) was a painter of stylistic variety who brought a new approach to composition. Rosso Fiorentino was also capable of originality and innovation  and was much influenced by Cabalistic literature and esoteric works. He worked in Florence and other cities in Tuscany such as Volterra, as well as for the King of France, François 1st. Many visitors coming to Florence are certainly not aware that Rosso Fiorentino is the painter of many superb angels (the small painting “Music-making angel” is a delight), that have certainly inspired the designers of goods being sold in the shops!
And, after the visit, you can also watch an intriguing video by Bill Viola “ The greetings”, inspired by “The Visitation” by Jacopo Pontormo.
Staying in our apartment  in the Palazzo Larderel in Via Tornabuoni is certainly a wonderful way of visiting Palazzo Strozzi’s exhibition on Pontormo e Rosso Fiorentino, but Villa le Barone has also 2 special offers with free tickets to allow its guests to visit this “once in a life time” unique exhibition .
