19th century Napoléon III buttoned arm chairs at Villa le Barone

19th century Napoléon III buttoned arm chairs at Villa le Barone

“Chairs in Society”, this is the name of the exhibition organized in Paris retracing the art of chairs in France over a few centuries. We are not pretending to compete with the exhibition, but you will find also in our Villa in Tuscany a large diversity of antique arm chairs and seats… on which you can sit!

For many centuries and indeed for thousands of years chairs were an article of state and dignity rather than an article of ordinary use and still today chairs can be a symbol of power, projecting an intriguing, if subliminal, message. It was not, in fact, until the 16th century that it became common anywhere. Seats have varied in size, shape (sofas, bergeres, wingback…) and in upholstery: the majority of the chairs of all countries until the middle of the 17th century were of timber without upholstery. When it became customary to cushion them, leather was often employed. And velvet and silk were extensively used in the 19thcentury. A lot of craftsmanship is required to make a chair: cabinet maker, gilder, varnisher, and upholster!

You will find in our Villa many authentic antique chairs and seats, of course now with new coverings: in the entrance the Renaissance leather chairs, and Renaissance arm chairs. Close to the stairs, two welcoming 19th century Napoléon III buttoned arm chairs (“fauteuils crapaud”); in the lounges, sofas, armchairs, and, close to the fire place wingbacks; in the rooms also comfortable chairs or armchairs…as Lauren Lola wrote ”Chairs could transcend time and generations. It’s all about considering what stories could be told if they had voices of their own.”

Hotel with infinity pool in Tuscany

Infinity pool in Tuscany at Villa le Barone

Infinity pool in Tuscany at Villa le Barone

A hotel with an infinity pool in Tuscany, an infinity pool in travertine marble, heated and salted, a pool (in fact 2 pools!) with breathtaking views, in the middle of a garden, with roses and olive trees.

Can you imagine yourself under the Tuscan sun, on a top of a hill, swimming in a large infinity pool in travertine marble, a stone used since the ancient roman times. It has been used, in particular, in the 17th century by Bernini to build the Colonnade of St Peter square in Rome, and also by Michaelangelo for the external ribs of the dome of ST Peter. The travertine marble that we used, color “noce” (walnut), come from the Rapolano quarries.

It is a pool sanitized using a salt chlorination system, which presents many advantages, and in particular makes the pool’s water feel smooth and silky to the touch.

It is a heated pool, with a heat pomp using the heat from the earth. A sustainable technique that will allow our guests to use the pool during the whole season, including the chillier months such as April, May, and October.

It is a pool in the middle of a garden, with roses, olive trees, rosemary and other Mediterranean plants, where guests can rest on comfortable deck chairs and choose a nook which will suit them.

It is a pool with breathtaking 250° views on the Tuscan hills in Chianti, on the vineyards, on the San Leolino Romanesque church.

And in fact there are 2 pools! Under the large one, guests will find a smaller one, with a travertine bench where they can sit, and pushing a button a cascade will fall on their shoulders to massage them!

We look forward for you to experiment our infinity heated salted pool in travertine marble!

Lagerstromiae on a terraced landscape in Chianti

Lagerstromiae on a terraced landscape in Chianti

“If you have a garden and a library, you have all what you need” wrote Cicero. This is what you will find in our Chianti countryside hotel!

Lovely gardens with magnificent views:

  • From the “heart garden”, a small garden Italian style with hearts bordered with box hedges, you can contemplate the sunsets!
  • From the garden under the pool bordered by a hedge of laurel, arbutus, hawthorn, and many other species to discover, you have stupendous views on the Chianti hills and its hamlet. You can read amongst the olive trees and the roses!
  • A little bit below on the right you find the fruit trees garden, with its apricot trees, jujube, medlar, cherry and plum trees…
  • On the left , the terraced landscape with the lagerstroemia is bordered by fig trees …
  • Under the garden house, you can read and rest in the comfortable deck-chairs that are at your disposal. You can also watch sunrises…
  • And above the “garden house”, the vegetable and flower garden which is providing the flowers for the bouquets that guests find everywhere in the Villa…

And a library and books everywhere: in the lounges, in the rooms…

And we can organize visits of famous historic gardens for our guests!

Enjoy relaxing, enjoy reading, enjoy beauty in our Villa!

Craftmanship at Villa le Barone, Chianti: the chandelier in the
restaurant

Quality craftsmanship in Tuscany and Italy is still very much alive in many areas: leather, iron, glass, gilding, jewelry, ceramics …The exhibition “Artigianato e Palazzo” will be held in the gardens of the Palazzo Corsini in Florence from 18 to 21 May is a demonstration of it. Many craftmen are working for Villa le Barone and you can admire their works in our restaurant, in the rooms, in our salons!

In Tuscany and, more generally, in Italy, there are many craftsmen, heirs of a secular tradition, who design and produce superb unique objects, using traditional materials and tools… If you are a little curious and come out of the touristiest places, you will discover in Florence or in other smaller towns the workshops of craftsmen who will be happy to discuss with you and present their know-how!

The 2017 exhibition “Artigianato e Palazzo”, held every year in the beautiful Italian gardens of the Palazzo Corsini in Florence, will take place from 18th to 21st may. It will be the occasion for the visitors to discover the talents of many artisans and admire them at work … (www.artigianatoepalazzo.it)

At Villa le Barone, we are happy to have many local artisans working for us: the chandeliers in our restaurant were made especially for us at Cappelli (www.cappelliferrobattuto.it)in Greve in Chianti, some of our bedside lamps come from Tole Style in Impruneta, other lamps from the glass My Light in Montelupo, lamp shades from Leonardo Becucci…

Visit “Artigianato e Palazzo”, come to Villa le Barone and discover all these talents! We will be happy to present them to you…
